The Jazz Institute of Chicago closes its celebration of the centennial of Louis Armstrong’s arrival to Chicago with a very special Jazz City concert. Free and open to public, this concert features Bruce Henry and Alysha Monique as they cover some of Louis and Ella’s most loved holiday songs.
Chicago loves PoPs, Tribute to Louis Armstrong
Jazz Institute of Chicago presents a special evening honoring the 100th anniversary of Louis Armstrong's arrival to Chicago. The story told in three parts with trumpet greats Orbert Davis, Corey Wilkes, and Maurice Brown, and acclaimed vocalist Dee Alexander at the Logan Center for the Arts on October 20, 2022.

Our tribute to the great Louis Armstrong and the centennial celebration of his arrival to Chicago continues on October 7 at Loyola Park in Roger Park Chicago. Our featured band is the wildly popular Chicago Cellar Boys, the premier vintage band in Chicago.

An all-Black women's string quintet, led by celebrated musicians Jordyn Davis and Natalie Frakes, along with several guest musicians, will make this a memorable experience for the entire family.

Join us at 6PM at the Jazz Showcase for a dynamic panel discussion with Chicago trumpeters Bobby Lewis and Kimberly Branch, trombonist Russ Phillips, and cornetist Ben LaMar Gay to discuss Louis Armstrong’s impact on jazz and his enduring legacy.
This will be followed by an 8PM concert of traditional jazz in the spirit of Louis Armstrong led by Bobby Lewis and Russ Phillips.

100 years ago in Chicago, gifted pianist and composer Lil Hardin Armstrong helped guide and define the career of her husband, Louis Armstrong. We take this opportunity to observe Women’s History Month by discussing a her career with a panel of distinguished Chicago jazz artists and educators, including pianist Bethany Pickens, pianist and Jazz Institute of Chicago Fellow Alexis Lombre, saxophonist, composer and educator Sharel Cassity, and moderator Judith Stein. Plus, hear recordings and live samplings of her work.
