Peddling Music In Rhythm with Maggie Brown

  • Harold Washington Library (lower level) 400 South State Street Chicago, IL, 60605 United States (map)

As part of the Jazz Institute of Chicago partnership with Chicago Public Library and its “Summer at CPL”, we present Peddling Music In Rhythm” featuring vocalist and storyteller Maggie Brown.

Peddling Music In Rhythm is an interactive musical performance led by vocalist & storyteller Maggie Brown. Peddling Music In Rhythm gathers its inspiration from the street cries and hollers encapsulated in the songs and poetry of her father, Oscar Brown, Jr. Today’s food trucks, pop-up tamale, fruit, and popsicle carts, are preceded by days when commerce and enterprise was conducted by the Watermelon Man, newspaper boys, the Ice Man, Ragman, and many more. Characters who had a rhythmic, melodic way of broadcasting their arrival were once heard up and down the streets and alleys of Chicago.
