HEP: Heritage | Education | Play
June 29, 2024
11:30 AM - 2:30 PM
Jazz Institute of Chicago
410 S Michigan Ave. Suite 500

THIS EVENT IS NO LONGER ACCEPTING RSVP’S.

Multi-Grammy© Award winning trumpeter Brian Lynch has played Afro-Caribbean (Latin) music for more than four decades. In this presentation and clinic, he will take you through the basics of the rhythmic foundation of the clave and demonstrate how it has influenced his distinctive style of playing and composing. Lynch’s work, drawing upon his collaboration with Latin music icons such as Eddie Palmieri along with apprenticeship with jazz masters like Art Blakey and Horace Silver, has resulted in an important body of original music played by his Spheres Of Influence ensemble (featured at this year’s Chicago Latin Jazz Festival) and a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for Simpático in collaboration with Eddie Palmieri.

Reserve your seat as JIC launches “HEP”, a new series of events designed to engage music educators, ascendant performers and audiences in the heritage, education and play of jazz.

This masterclass is part of the new JIC program FRONT ROW, live and virtual concerts, discussions, and events from the fifth-floor offices of the Jazz Institute of Chicago at the Fine Arts Building.

JUAN PASTOR CHINCHANO

Friday, July 12, 6PM

Drummer and percussionist Juan Pastor’s fourth and latest release, Cachito, shines in its maturity and emotional depth. The album highlights not only Pastor’s unique artistic voice and compositional prowess, but also the musicianship of his collaborators, including core bandmates Dustin Laurenzi, Stu Mindeman, and Matt Ulery, as well as several additional special guests. Dedicated to Pastor’s late father Carlos, the album is an exploration of grief and loss, of acceptance, of steadfast courage.
