The Jazz Institute of Chicago is happy to partner with Fulton Street Collective to celebrate International Jazz Day, with musical artists who've come to enrich Chicago's mix from afar.

As a culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month, we proudly present the multi-cultural diversity of local jazz expression, as some of our favorite players touch on their ties to their native lands while making music of the here and now. Join us on a 90-minute virtual guided tour in which echoes of Chile, Japan, Italy, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Puerto Rico, Venezuela are stirred into the sounds of our city -all without leaving the comforts of home!

Grazyna Auguscik (Chicago/ Poland)

Singer, composer, arranger, and producer Grazyna Auguscik has won the praise and admiration of music critics, jazz enthusiasts and even non-jazz audiences with a singular voice that speaks a universal language. She is one of the most intriguing contemporary vocalists on today’s world jazz scene. Her elusive style challenges traditional definitions of jazz and shows a vocalist and musician without boundaries. Her unorthodox approach to rewriting classic works pays tribute to their authors and at the same time is an adventure into uncharted territory. Her original music gives a fresh taste of uncanny flavor.

For this performance, they will present few jazz pieces inspired by Polish folk music.

Fareed Haque (Chicago/ Chile/ Pakistan)

Fareed Haque is a modern guitar virtuoso. Steeped in classical and jazz traditions, his unique command of the guitar and different musical styles inspire his musical ventures with tradition and fearless innovation. Born to a Pakistani father and Chilean mother, Fareed’s extensive travels and especially long stays in Spain, France, Iran, Pakistan, and Chile exposed Haque to different kinds of music from a very early age. While this natural eclecticism has become a hallmark of Haque’s music, it was repeated visits to Von Freeman’s Chicago jam sessions that gave Haque a grounding in the Chicago blues and jazz traditions.

Liza Micelli (Chicago/ Italy/ Puerto Rico)

Chicago born pianist Liza Micelli has always been curious about humanity and our interconnectivity. It’s apparent in her heartfelt songwriting and provocative instrumental works.

Liza began playing piano by ear at age 3. After noticing her inclination for improvisation at age 12, her first piano teacher recommended she switch to Jazz studies. It wasn’t until studying at Columbia College Chicago that she'd discover a hunger for Afro-Caribbean music, deciding to then move to Puerto Rico to continue her studies at the Conservatory of Music. Living in PR, learning Spanish and immersing herself in the cultural fabric expanded her social perspective, and greatly informed Liza’s musical style. Liza has had the privilege to play with Eddie Gomez, David Sanchez, Paoli Mejias, Batacumbele, Richie Flores, Manolito Rodriguez among others. She has also worked 5 seasons as principal keyboardist for Twentieth Century Fox’s hit show Empire.

Her album, “La Gran Dictadora” is a musical reaction to Micelli’s grappling with her identity as U.S. citizen, and processing the shocking revelations of what we’ve done.

Juan Pastor Chinchano (Chicago/ Peru)

El Regreso
Drummer/percussionist and composer Juan Pastor finds himself caught between two homes: his native Lima, Peru, and the city where he has lived for the past 13 years, Chicago. As a result, both his original compositions and the sound of his ensemble, Chinchano, draw life from deep sources - Peru’s enchantingly diverse culture, history, landscapes, and folk music, and the language of North American Jazz. Pastor evokes his multifaceted story poignantly on his new recording, El Regreso (Quinto Pulso, 2019).
