JAZZ LINKS STUDENT COUNCIL
Created in 2005, the Jazz Links Student Council (JSLC) gives high school jazz musicians the opportunity to develop musically and professionally through exposure to live music, workshops with professional musicians, and performance opportunities throughout the city. In addition, JLSC members have participated in master classes at Columbia College, produced a CD, and are mentored in the business of music by veteran jazz artists.
Open to students grades 6-12
Application required. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Meetings and concerts will be on Friday evenings.
NextGenJazz Emerging Artists Project
Members of the Jazz Links Student Council are also eligible for the NextGenJazz Emerging Artists Project. The Emerging Artists Project promotes leadership, creativity, and a foundation for self-marketing by working with participants to develop skills necessary to lead their own ensembles, create an online presence, and promote and manage their own gigs and shows.
Since the fall of 2016, the Symphony Center Presents Jazz Series has formally collaborated with JIC’s Jazz Links program by offering Student Council members the opportunity to attend nearly all jazz concerts presented by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, as well as preconcert lectures and the artists’ soundcheck when possible. In addition, Symphony Center Presents has arranged preconcert question and answer sessions with some of the visiting jazz musicians including Branford Marsalis, Jason Moran, Nicholas Payton, Jack DeJohnette, Joshua Redman, members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and many more. Funding for SCP Jazz educational activities has been generously provided by Dan J. Epstein, Judy Guitelman and the Dan J. Epstein Family Foundation.
