Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz/We REInsist! Max Roach and Oscar Brown, Jr.’s Freedom Now Suite, Reimagined

August 27, 2015 - 12:00 am - 6:30 pm

Saxophonists Juli Wood and Caroline Davis offer a bold interpretation of the classic 1960 album, We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite. A powerful expression of the Civil Rights movement, the hard-hitting recording has never lost its powerful resonance. Recognizing its relevance today, Wood and Davis have “reimagined” the album – updating the original words written by Oscar Brown, Jr. and sung by Abbey Lincoln with a new collaboration between Davis and Maggie Brown, Oscar’s daughter. Trombonist Tom Garling has written new arrangements and will join a band featuring trumpeter Marquis Hill, saxophonist Ari Brown, pianist Ron Perrillo, bassist Dennis Carroll, drummer Greg Artry and the Najwa Drum Corps.
