Laurenzi Ernst Green
One of the most enjoyable developments in recent jazz and related genres has been the diversification of the trio. Groups including the late Paul Motian’s memorable trio with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano, Ken Vandermark’s Sound in Action trio with its dual drummers and, of course, the Bad Plus have opened up the format to all kinds of new musical possibilities and instrumental combinations.
Joining those illustrious ranks, the young collective of tenor saxophonist and “aspiring beatmaker” Dustin Laurenzi, bassist and singer Katie Ernst and drummer Andrew Green offer an entrancing sound that’s somewhere between hip-hop and lounge music. Influenced by the spare experimentation of clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre’s trios and modern classical music’s minimalist school, Laurenzi/Ernst/Green also thrives on healthy doses of front and center tenor.
