Hyde Park Jazz Society Presents “A Tribute to Jodie Christian” Featuring Ken Chaney

With the death of Jodie Christian early this year, Chicago jazz lost one of its most beloved artists. Though his modesty kept him from attaining the fame he deserved – he didn’t record an album under his own name until 1992 – he was known far and wide as one of the few pianists who thrived across the entire spectrum of jazz style. He accompanied legends as different as soul jazz legend Gene Ammons and free jazz master Roscoe Mitchell. He recorded solo and with horns and vocalists. And he did it all with a twinkle in his eye.

South Side keyboard veteran Ken Chaney, versatile leader of such popular Windy City bands as the Awakening and the Xperience, knew Christian well. Today, he will pay heartfelt tribute to him with a strong quintet including saxophonists Fred Jackson and Juli Wood, she of the exuberant sound on baritone, bassist Joshua Ramos and drummer Charles Heath. Christian was most at home playing standards, which he interpreted brilliantly, but he also left behind some memorable originals. Count on hearing a sampling of them today.
