Erin McDougald Quartet

Aug 31
2:00-3:00 PM
Jazz and Heritage Pavilion

Erin McDougald’s sobriquet “Flapper Girl” may suggest that she’s a throwback to Charleston era, and while she’s fluent in the swing repertoire, there’s no question that she’s a great talent for the present age, bringing a thoroughly contemporary flair to songs past and present. She’s made three terrific albums and her most recent collection Outside the Soiree features an all-star band including David Liebman, Tom Harrell, Rodney Green, and Mark Sherman, and beyond showcasing her precise pitch, melodic instincts, and inventive phrasing, it also demonstrates her abilities as a composer. McDougald imposes her improvisational savvy on a wide array of material, but she never gets carried away—she maintains a strong respect for written melodies.

She’s a regular visitor to both coasts, performing in some of the finest jazz rooms around, such as celebrated New York haunts like the Metropolitan Room, Smalls, and Smoke, as well as just about every worthwhile Chicago club there is, Andy’s and Jazz Showcase among them. This afternoon McDougald leads her excellent working band: pianist and guitarist Ron Block, bassist Larry Gray, and drummer Eric Montzka.
