Edwin Sanchez Project

Sept. 2 - 2012

Pianist Edwin Sanchez, a Chicagoan with Puerto Rican roots, grew up in Humboldt Park, where he absorbed a continual stream of Latin, soul and jazz from the radio and the neighborhood. As you can tell from these songs from his planned set list for the festival, he remains an impassioned collector of styles: Dizzy Gillespie’s “Manteca,” Michael Jackson’s “I Can’t Help It,” Kool and the Gang’s “Too Hot” and Duke Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).” You can also count on forays into Philadelphia soul and Detroit funk. But the Latin influence comes first.

The Edwin Sanchez Project will include tenor saxophonist Robert Collaso, trombonist Raphael Crawford, singer-guitarist Johnny Martinez, bassist Robert Lovecchio, drummer and timbales player Brian Rivera, congas player Frankie Ocasio and singer-percussionist Joe Frau.
