Jazz Education Day: The Artistic Process

FREE public programming in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month!

 

This educational, fun-filled day of music instruction and conversation features:

  • Multi-reedist, composer, and educator Victor Goines at midday performing and explaining the rehearsal and performance process;
  • Ensemble workshops with four expert jazz musicians;
  • A panel of notable jazz educators, moderated by Richard Steele;
  • And a jam session open to all musicians concluding the day!

12:15-1:45pm – The Artistic Process – Unpacking the Performance featuring Victor Goines

 

(Preston Bradley Hall)

Educator and performer Victor Goines will perform and explain the rehearsal and performance process to the audience as they get an inside look at how music is assembled on and off the bandstand.

 

Victor Goines is Director of Jazz Studies at Northwestern University, clarinetist, saxophonist, composer, and educator; member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Septet since 1993; and former artistic director of the jazz program at the Juilliard School. 


2-4pm – The Artist in the Making – Free ensemble workshops

ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED – Deadline extended to April 11

 

Big bands and small ensembles will perform in front of live audience, and then receive feedback during a performance workshop conducted by some of Chicago’s top jazz musicians—Miguel de la Cerna, piano; Marlene Rosenberg, acoustic bass; Ernie Adams, drums; Geof Bradfield, reeds. Observers welcome and encouraged to attend.

Pre-registration is required for the ensemble workshop. College or high school ensembles and combos and non-affiliated musicians that are interested in participating must register online or by calling Michael Nearpass at (312) 427-1676, ext. 116.


4:30-5:45pm – Panel Discussion: From the Bordello to the Concert Hall

 

A panel discussion about the evolution of jazz and jazz education

(Claudia Cassidy Theatre)

 

Moderator: Richard Steele, former jazz deejay, emcee of Hyde Park Jazz Festival, WBEZ radio host.

Panelists: Paul Wertico, drummer, seven-time Grammy winner & associate professor of jazz studies at Roosevelt University; Bobbi Wilsyn, jazz vocalist & senior lecturer at Columbia College; Roosevelt Griffin, music educator & district band director in Harvey Schools, 2014 Golden Apple winner.


6:00-7:45pm – JAZZ JAM open to ALL 

(Preston Bradley Hall)

 

Led by saxophonist & educator, Jarrard Harris, this jam session is open to musicians of all levels and ages.  With Dennis Luxion on piano, Bob Hodge on bass and Isaiah Spencer on drums.
