JazzCity presents a reflection on Langston Hughes’ masterwork poem about race relations in the ’60s, Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz This original musical illustrates the trials and resilience of the human spirit and its roots in community. Writer, performer, and singer Marvin Tate collaborates with composers Greg Ward and Ben LaMar Gay to integrate music, song, dance, poetry, storytelling, and film to intertwine Hughes’ vision with Tate’s own personal journey of growing up in a post-civil rights Chicago.
JazzCity is a free concert series initiated in 1997 by the Jazz Institute of Chicago in collaboration with the Chicago Park District, now celebrating its 20th season of bringing people together from across the city to listen to Chicago’s top jazz musicians.
