I figured any new forum about jazz should have a post about John Coltrane, one of, if not the, most powerful voices in all of jazz music.
He underwent such intense musical transformations and I love all periods of Coltrane's work because they paint a picture of the development of an artist. People who lambast the avant-garde in jazz need look no further than Coltrane to see that the so-called "out" music is nothing more than the logical progression of improvisatory music.
That's not to say that I don't love me some Giant Steps.
I guess this will be a post where we can all share our love of John Coltrane...maybe later I'll tell the story of the time I thought I saw his ghost hover over the stage at the old Velvet Lounge.
