Raices, a Tribute to Ruben Alvarez

Raíces pays homage to the originators of Latin Jazz such as Cal Tjader, Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria and also performs original music composed in the same genre. The group was founded by Chicago percussionist Ruben Alvarez to whom this performance will pay tribute. Raíces has played to packed audiences at Fitzgerald’s Night Club and enthusiastic crowds at several area music festivals.

Growing from a trio into a powerful 10-piece over the last six years, De La Buena has been electrifying audiences with their own brand of Afro-Cuban and Latin Jazz. De La Buena, ever conscious of the influence and necessary respect for tradition… yet, a band willing to inject sophisticated, psychedelic sensibilities into an aggressive, expansive framework

Dynamic trumpet artist Tito Carrillo is a 25+ year veteran of Chicago’s vibrant jazz and Latin music scene. He contributes nine indelible originals to the album’s eleven tracks, and the music reflects his ongoing expansion on his Latin and Black American Music roots, both of which share a common ancestor — Africa. Carrillo seeks to merge black music of the three Americas in his own music, blurring the lines between Afro-Caribbean rhythmic styles, soul, funk, and modern jazz.

Marlon Simon and the nagual spirits

Born in the small town of Venezuel Percussionist Marlon Simon has worked with ilton Ruíz, Dave Valentin, Jerry González, and Chucho Valdés. With own group he formed his own Latin jazz ensemble, the nagual spirits, he showcases his talents as a composer and drummer, defining a distinct approach to Latin Jazz.
